Botox & Fillers Q & A

George D. Kovacs, MD

How does Botox work?

The Botox treatment is derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This microbe creates a toxin that’s diluted and then injected into certain muscles in tiny, controlled amounts. When injected, the Botox blocks the signals from your nerves to your muscles and weakens specific muscles. If your muscles can’t contract, your wrinkles relax and soften.

The team at George D. Kovacs, MD provides Botox to address a variety of cosmetic concerns, including:

  • Scarring
  • Loss of facial volume
  • Fine lines and wrinkles

Botox is convenient and only takes a few minutes in-office without anesthesia. You can return to your daily activities immediately.

During your Botox procedure, Dr. Kovacs injects Botox with a fine needle. Some people might feel tolerable but mild discomfort, but most don’t report any trouble.

Who is a good candidate for Botox?

Most people are suitable candidates for Botox, with a few exceptions. Dr. Kovacs and the Beach Cities Medical team can answer your questions during your consultation and provide you with valuable and detailed information to help you determine the right injectable to suit your needs.

If you’re considered a good candidate for Botox, you should avoid aspirin for two weeks and alcohol for a few days prior to your treatment to decrease any possible bruising.

You’re not a suitable candidate for Botox if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or if you have a neurological disease.

What can I expect after my Botox treatment?

Most people don’t experience any symptoms of Botox, and the treatment doesn’t involve any downtime. For those who do experience any side effects, you might have a mild headache that soon subsides or some mild bruising that resolves within a day or two.

Don’t rub or irritate the treated area for at least 12 hours after your treatment. Most people experience the best results of Botox anywhere from three days to one week following treatment. The results of your Botox can last up to six months or more.

Your muscle function returns gradually, and your wrinkles might also return. To help you maintain the results you can have additional treatments, scheduled at regular intervals. Wrinkles can come back with injectables, but they’re never usually as visible as they were before.

Turn back the clock on the subtle signs and changes of aging and smooth your skin with Botox. Learn whether Botox is the right choice for you and schedule your consultation online or call George D. Kovacs, MD.
